We’re looking for a student-focussed Teaching and Engagement Librarian who will inspire and empower students to succeed in their studies and beyond. As part of the wider Library Teaching and Engagement Team you will work closely with library and academic colleagues to embed information and digital literacy into programmes, design innovative learning activities and ensure students develop the critical information and digital skills needed to thrive. As a member of the team you will play an active role in planning and delivering services and supporting cross-institutional projects that enhance teaching and leaning.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:  Teaching and Engagement Librarian

Job Purpose:

You will work collaboratively with colleagues to design and deliver engaging and impactful information and digital literacy programmes to all members of the University making a direct contribution to student and staff success. As Teaching and Engagement Librarian you will be a key point of liaison ensuring communication between the directorate and colleges and representing Library and Archives at college and programme meetings. You will work collaboratively across the directorate taking a user centred approach on projects and working groups. 

You will also work with teams across BNU to design and deliver outreach activities that promote Library and Archives across the institution and our external stakeholders. 

At all times you will practice an inclusive approach and support building an inclusive university community where people can be themselves.  

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities of the role:  

 

  1. To plan and deliver engaging and accessible library induction, information and digital literacy teaching to all levels of the BNU community. This will include face-to-face, blended and distance learning and the production of asynchronous learning materials.  
  2. To support all library users in their use of the Library’s resources, spaces and services including managing complex subject enquiries. 
  3. Consult with the academic community to share a mutual understanding of strategic and operational priorities and engage in effective liaison to support current teaching, research and learning activities including supporting quality assurance processes. 
  4. Ensure that Library and Archives are recognised and have a high profile beyond the physical spaces by leading engagement and outreach activities using a range of communication channels. 
  5. Develop methods to understand the needs of customers to inform decision making, budget setting and planning strategic priorities for the directorate. 
  6. Prepare reports, gathering, collating, and analysing information to provide feedback from formal or informal mechanisms e.g. NSS, committee meetings etc. 
  7. Prepare, implement, and monitor action plans in collaboration with colleagues across the University and agreed with line manager. 
  8. Assist the Library and Archives Management team to implement changes in policy of practice including proactive advocacy with colleges e.g. reading list guidance. 
  9. Work with the Content and Digital Environment team to carry out regular reviews of content and subscriptions in line with current teaching and learning needs. 
  10. Contribute to the library’s evening and weekend staffing rota. 
  11. Whilst based at one campus the post holder will be expected to work regularly at our other campuses as needed. 
  12. Comply with relevant legislative and other requirements (e.g., the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR; Health and Safety; UKVI; and Equality and Diversity) in all working practices. 
  13. Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required. 
  14. Supervisory duties including motivating and supporting team members, giving direction and feedback and ensuring adequate staffing cover.
