We have an exciting opportunity for an individual skilled in Costume design and construction to join our Technical and Simulation Resources team. The purpose of the role is to provide the highest levels of service to staff and students as they turn designs and ideas into reality, using a range of materials and processes, following safe working practices at all times. 

 

You must have excellent theoretical and practical knowledge of the costume industry, be industry and workshop experienced and be able to supervise student activity, providing assistance where needed.  This includes demonstrating techniques using a variety of materials and equipment. You will also be responsible for workshop Health and Safety, maintaining a stock of consumables and supplies, preparing teaching materials, and equipment maintenance. A good understanding of the costume construction process is essential.

Job Purpose:

The purpose of the role is to transfer the skillset and knowledge required for the costume industry via practical demonstrations, and student support, using safe working procedures at all times; practicing an inclusive approach and support building an inclusive university community where people can be themselves

 

Main Duties & Responsibilities of the role:

  • Prepare equipment and materials for use by students and lecturers.
  • To demonstrate equipment and techniques relevant to Costume design and making.
  • To ensure that equipment is correctly stored and maintained, ensuring adequate supplies of consumables.
  • To ensure efficient booking out and return of kit for relevant sessions.
  • To support students and staff and ensure they are confident and proficient in the safe use of equipment.
  • To provide digital support to students where knowledge of design and other software packages relevant to Costume are essential
  • To assist with the presentation of project work.
  • Preparation of materials for assessment.
  • To maintain inventories of equipment, identifying faults and reporting to senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • To provide operational support to senior colleagues as and when required.
  • To help to ensure all areas provide a clean, safe and secure working environment and satisfy relevant Health and Safety regulations, reporting any concerns to senior managers.
  • To collaborate with colleagues across the wider Directorate to provide a customer-focussed service, playing a proactive role in improving the Student Experience.
  • To contribute to the student experience – demonstrating an awareness of the need for ‘customer focus’ in respect of resolving issues.
  • To be responsible for the booking and scheduling of sessions, liaising with academic staff and timetabling.
  • Comply with relevant legislative and other requirements (e.g., the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR; Health and Safety; UKVI; and Equality and Diversity) in all working practices
  • Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required.
